Best Gaming Laptops Of 2013
Can’t afford a Playstation or Xbox? But still need a PC… How about a gaming laptop? That way you can have your cake and eat it too. In this article we are going to talk about 3 of the best gaming laptops for 2013-a high end model, a mid range and an affordable gaming laptop.
Razer Blade 14
The Razer Blade 14 holds the title of the ‘worlds thinnest gaming laptop’. Combining powerful graphics and a lightweight sleek design, this truly is mobile gaming. But making things smaller is difficult hence a hefty price tag, also smaller design means everything is closer together which means that it heats up a lot faster…
This laptop is slim and sexy with stylish black aluminum case and interior sporting the three headed snake insignia of the razer blade brand. It weighs in at 4.2-pounds (1.9 kilograms), 13.6 x 9.3 x 0.66-inch (34 x23x1-cm). The screen is not quite 1080p but it was very clear on the 1600 x 900 display. Although the viewing angles were not the best if you are sitting at a 45 degree angle but that is highly unlikely that you would be…
In terms of audio you ears will be delighted by the Stereo 2.0 speakers which are run by Dolby’s Home Theater v4 software. So what does this machine have in terms of hardware? Im glad you asked, the Razer is packing a Nvidia GeForce GTX 765M GPU with 2GB of VRAM graphics card coupled with fourth generation 2.2-GHz quad-core Intel Core i7-4702HQ CPU with 8GB of RAM. The hard drives on this beast are a 1TB 5,400rpm hard drive for storage and a 256GB SSD (solid state drive) for ultra fast boot up. The battery life is an impressive 8 hours with continuous surfing via wifi obviously much shorter when playing games….
Summary; with a starting price of $1,799 the Razer Blade 14 is the most expensive laptop in this post. The slim design and light weight are a bonus but the fact that it runs so hot means you can not constantly play games unless you have a separate usb fan to keep it cool. A lack of a full 1080p hd screen was also a bit of a bummer.. On the plus side it is a very powerful lightweight gaming notebook with a long lasting battery!
Alien ware specialise in gaming laptops so for an Alienware laptop to be featured as one of the top gaming laptops of the year is no surprise. The performance is nothing short of amazing which is to be expected from Alienware. This laptop suits the serious gamer who doesnt mind carrying around a large but impressive laptop-they even have custom back packs for Alienware laptops!
The processor is a quad-core i7 processor running at 2.7GHz, 16GB of ram and a ultra high-performance GeForce GTX 780M with 4GB of video memory. Raw power! It has a 250GB SSD harddrive for ultra fast booting and a 750gb hard drive for storage. You can view the performance of the hardware with the impressive 17.3-inch screen with full HD resolution (1920×1080). The speakers are very impressive with crisp clear sound and are louder than most laptops.
Th downfall of this laptop is it’s size and weight 5cm thick and just shy of four kilos heavy it isn’t designed to too portable, also you wouldn’t want to be too far from a powerpoint with the four hour battery life. The thickness has an advantage however, it makes it extra sturdy and also allows for air to flow freely through the two large air vents allowing for hours of gaming without running the risk of damage due to high temperatures.
Summary; This an excellent gaming laptop that will ideally spend most of its life sitting on a desk due to it’s size and weight with a starting price of $1,499 it is only slightly cheaper than the Razer but it has a better screen, keyboard, touchpad, graphics card and processor making for a better gaming experience.
Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p
Lenovo IdeaPad Y510p 15.6-Inch Laptop
This is the most affordable gaming laptop in this review, with a reduced price you have to realise that it will not perform as well as the previous laptops but having said that it is still a powerful machine. The specs are certainly nothing to sneeze at- 2.2-GHz Intel Core i7- quad-core processor, 16GB of RAM, 1TB 5,400-rpm HDD and additional 24GB SSD. Not bad huh?
The 1.5 watt Dolby Home Theater-certified JBL speakers allow for loud clear sound and the 15.6 inch screen with a stunning 1080p display of 1920 x 1080 providing rich and vivid visuals that can be clearly seen when viewing from an angle less then 45 degrees, it certainly is not lacking in that department.
The Lenovo Ideapad is 15.2 x 10.2 x 0.6-1.4 inches (38x25x1-cm) and 6.4 pounds (2.9 kilos) So it is relatively portable without being a hassle. The design is quite plain apart from the red tinted keys and speakers to add a bit of visual appeal. The keyboard is quite small and awkward to use. But the clickpad makes up for that.
When put to the test this laptop heated quite significantly when playing games and the 6-cell lithium ion battery life was an unimpressive 3 hours. The webcam failed to impress but on the light side this notebook features a removable drive called an ‘Ultrabay’. Which means you can easily swap out an optical drive for a second graphics card or an additional fan.
Summary; at a starting price of $1,299 you get slightly more then what you are paying for, obviously it doesn’t do well against the other two models in this article but it still packs a lot of value for the price, Gamers on a budget can still get a decent laptop for a reduced price. My personal favorite is the Alienware 17 mainly due to the fact that it keeps cool and the size and weight does not bother me as I rarely remove my laptop from my desk…
