Install / Uninstall Android 4.0 ICS CyanogenMod9 on HP TouchPad Tablet

If you’re HP TouchPad user, then you probably missing that beautiful Android Interface and powerful functionality, which is missing in WebOS or any other OS. There are plenty or reasons, you might want to have Android on your HP Tablet, and it would be best option if Android 4.0 ICS would be there on your Tablet. Even, we’re not asking you to fully replace your OS, but you should keep the old OS as well, but you can easily install Android as a Second Operating System, which is called as Dual Booting.

In this Tutorial Article, we’ll guide you through the process of Installing CyanogenMod 9 Android 4.0 ICS Firmware on your HP TouchPad. The CM9 is Ice Cream Sandwich build based, so it would provide latest features in your HP TouchPad Tablet. CM9 will be providing option to boot into either WebOS or Android when system boots up, for which you can easily select between the Operating Systems. Even, when you don’t want to use the Android OS, you can easily uninstall as well, for that Instructions are given in this same tutorial. So let’s proceed with the procedures, but before that you should know about the requirements and preparations of the process.

Disclaimer: HP TouchPad is a WebOS Tablet, and not supports Android Officially. But 3rd part developers has found the way to Install Android 4.0 ICS on HP TouchPad. Hence, if you will install Android on your Tablet, it would void the warranty, and you will not longer able to claim warranty. Pre Requisite

  • Download Latest Version of Java (Java 6) and Install in your Computer, if it is not installed. The configure it as suggested:
    • On the Windows PC: Control Panel>Java>General Tab>About. Then ensure that it is displaying Java 6 Standard Edition. If version is lower than Visit Java.com to download latest version of Java Runtime.
    • On Mac, Open Applications>Utilities>Java Preferences>General> and ensure that it is Java 6 version. Otherwise latest version should be downloaded and installed.
  • It is good idea to back up all the data from HP TouchPad Tablet, for safety purpose.
  • Now Download and install Novacom Installer. After the download, click the ‘Install NOvacom’ button, which will start installing the drivers.
  • Now Download latest version of CyanogenMod ROM Firmware.
  • Now, proceed to download more important files in a folder, so that files can be kept organized:

Now, you have everything ready to proceed with the installation process, or Android on your TouchPad Tablet. Kindly note, there are lot of tutorials on the Internet, but we’ve to tried to make sure that we can make this tutorial simple, easy and well explained. How to Install Android 4.0 ICS Based CyanogenMod9 ROM on your HP TouchPad Tablet

Step 1: Firstly, you need to Extract the file (ACME Installer 2) which you had downloaded earlier, and copy it to the location where you have installed Novacom. For Windows users it can be found by default in C:\Program FilesPalm, Inc or HP webOS. Whereas in Mac, it can be located after opening the Go Menu>Go To Folder>Enter /opt/nova/bin. After that you will be in folder, then you would able to see files and folders whose name is novacom and novacomd, along with others. You need to copy ACME Installer2 file in this folder.

Step 2: If your HP TouchPad is turned on, then you should connect it the computer with the help of USB Cable. You should select Mass Storage Mode at this step.

Step 3: After verifying the connectivity, Create a new folder ‘cm9install‘ in your Windows PC or Mac.

Step 4: Copy all the zipped files you’ve downloaded in ‘cm9install’ folder. After that, you can safely remove the data cable, and unplug the TouchPad from computer.

Step 5: Boot the HP TouchPad into recovery mode. For that you need to firstly Shut Down Tablet. Then restart into recovery with holding down power button+ volume up button before USB Symbol appears on the screen.

Step 6: Now, connect USB Cable to the TouchPad, and then into your computer. After that you need head over to the Command Prompt (Windows) or Terminal (Mac).

  • Windows:Open Command prompt, For that you can type ‘CMD’ in search box in Windows 7, or in ‘Run’ for Windows XP. After command window appears, run the following command:
    • cd c:\Program FilesPalm, Inc (or replace Palm, Inc with HP webOS, that depends on folder name in your Program files.)
    • You will see c:Program FilesPalm, Incalong with a blicking cursor. Then you need to type:
      • novacom.exe boot mem:// < ACMEInstaller2 and press Enter.
  • Mac Users:You need to open Terminal. After opening the Terminal Windows, run the following command:
    • cd /opt/nova/bin and press Enter.
    • You will see a new line, which will be with ‘bin’ between your username and computer name. You need to enter now this command:
      • ./novacom boot mem:// < ACMEInstaller2 and Press Enter.

Step 7: You will see codes roaming across your Tablet’s screen, this is indication that Installation is happening. After Installation would be completed, your Tablet would be restarted automatically.

Step 8: After restart, it will display a screen ‘moboot’, you can easily select now your desired OS to boot upon, from boot webOS, boot CyanogenMod, boot ClockworkMod, boot webOS Recovery, reboot, and shutdown options. You can use the keys volume up or voume down, and home button to select. Everytime, whenever you want to select the different OS, you can do so. If you’re in Android, you can reboot it, with holding down power button and then selecting reboot, followed by OK. While for webOS, you can make use of hold down power button, and then selecting ‘Shut Down’ option. Then you can easily turn on the device with (Holding down power button). You will have 5 secs. if you want to boot into the webOS, on the ‘moboot’ which would be appeared every time you will start your tablet.

Now, you have successfully Installed Android 4.0 ICS on your Tablet (CyanogenMod). If in case you are not liking this OS, and want to return back to only webOS, then what will you do? How to Uninstall Android 4.0 ICS Based CyanogenMod9 ROM on your HP TouchPad Tablet

Uninstall process is almost same as we did while Installing the Firmware. So, we have not explained below steps more, if you don’t know specific thing, you can find out in installation section above.

Step 1: Extract the ACME Uninstaller, which would wipe Android from your Tablet.

Step 2: Reboot TouchPad into the Recovery mode. After USB Symbol appears on the screen, connect USB cable to the computer.

Step 3: After USB Cable connectivity, you have to run following commands:

  • Windows:Open the Command prompt, type ‘CMD’ in search box in Windows 7, or in ‘Run’ for Windows XP. After the command window appears, run following command:
    • cd c:\Program FilesPalm, Inc (or replace Palm, Inc with HP webOS, that depends on folder name in your Program files.)
    • You will see c:Program FilesPalm, Incalong with a blicking cursor. Then you need to type:
      • novacom.exe boot mem:// < ACMEUninstaller and press Enter.
  • Mac Users:You need to open Terminal. After opening the Terminal Windows, run the following command:
    • cd /opt/nova/bin and press Enter.
    • You will see a new line, which will be with ‘bin’ between your username and computer name. You need to enter now this command:
      • ./novacom boot mem:// < ACMEUninstaller and Press Enter.

After running the above uninstall command, your HP TouchPad Tablet will display double ‘Penguin’ along with some lines of code on the screen. After this process would be finished, your Tablet would reboot with the HP logo. The Uninstall process has removed all the remaining components of Android OS from your HP TouchPad tablet.
