SMTP is nothing but Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It can be defined as a standard which is maintained when there is transmission of emails across the internet. SMTP is connection oriented. Being text based, connection is established with text. There is a sender and a receiver. Both of them connect with the help of a medium called as a Transmission Control Protocol. There is a SMTP client which sends the data from one side to another. There is also a SMTP server which receives this data at the other end.

One transaction that is sending and receiving of data between the SMTP client and server consists of parts. At first there is a MAIL command which helps in setting up the return address. This system is helpful in case the email has bounced back. This can happen when the recipient email address is either wrong or not working. The next one is the RCPT command in SMTP, which helps in setting up the recipient address to which the email data will be transferred. This command is called as many times as there are number of recipients.

The last command in SMTP is the DATA command. The server talks with the DATA command two times. First when it needs to accept the data through the pathway. The second instance happens after the transfer of data is complete. This is done as to know whether the data transferred would be accepted or completely rejected.

There can be two types of responses from a SMTP server. One is positive and another is negative response. When the SMTP server fails to accept and deliver the message then the message bounces back. This is called Reject. There is another positive response which is termed as drop. This is got when the message which was to be delivered is discarded.
